Lygia Clark was a Brazilian born in Belo Horizonte (Minas Gerais), Brazil in 1920. Clark received an artistic education in Rio de Janeiro when she was a young girl. Clark completed a Paris art course and studied with Arpad Szenes and Fernand Leger, modern masters. In 1954, she had her first solo exhibition at the Institut Endoplastique. Her art is a rare blend of the aesthetic and sensual.

The New Objectivity is the most prominent concept movement in art. Clark has pursued this idea in her work for over 40 year. The result is works of art which challenge traditional perceptions. Clark was a student of Pierre Fedida, a renowned psychiatrist, in Paris during the 1970s. Her investigational process coincided with groundbreaking events in the world, including the May 1968 events in France. During this period, Clark became increasingly critical of art institutions and began to think of her work as abandoning traditional art-making methods. Clark received psychoanalysis from Pierre Fedida (a psychiatrist) in the middle of the 1970s. The therapy was eventually stopped.
